May 2 2004: UPDATE

SOME FINAL WORDS
Please print this file and post it on your fridge.
It contains a the updated route map as well as a listing of the people coming on the trip and their contact information (except for Dana because I don't have her info.)

ROUTE UPDATE
The route has been revised to be more flexible in terms of on-the-fly changes. I thought this would be a good idea given that things can get unpredictable with a large group, and also the fact that the weather (especially in Temagami) is still not "summer-like". The new route is outlined in the PDF posted in the above section. The route still covers approximately 75km but has less portaging. This will allow us to pack slightly heavier (e.g. bring warm clothing).

GEAR
If you're unsure about anything, or don't have something mentioned in the revised gearlist please get in touch with me asap.

DEPARTURE
The plan at this point is to meet at my place on Wednesday night. Go through all the gear and items / pack them, and head out EARLY Thursday morning....3:30am.

That's all folks!

April 2 2004

It's going to be a good sized group coming on this trip. (Surprisingly) No-one objected to the dates I mentioned last time, so wer're gonna stick with those.

TEMAGAMI
Like I said last time, the trip is going to be four days in Temagami. Temagami isn't a provincial park, but mostly crownland that has a lot of really good canoe routes. There's an overview of it here.
I'm really looking forward to it because I haven't gone there myself.
It would be a good idea to pick up a personal copy of the map for the area...I think it's called "Temagami Canoe Routes".
Last time I checked, M.E.C. had them.

ROUTE
I posted a map that outlines our route here.
The route is about 75km long. With about 7km of portages. It's going to be a good mix of smaller and larger lakes / rivers.

GEAR
I know it's still early, but at your earliest convenience let me know if you have the following items:

1. A pack (good quality / about 80L volume)
2. Sleeping bag.
3. Tent (something light / fitting about 3 people)

SAFETY
It's obviously important to know how to recover a canoe if it tips. There are some good articles online. here is one of them.

That's it I think...

March 30 2004:

Well, the trip's about a month away...

Date
Some of the people potentially coming have exams until May 5. Therefore, the earliest weekend the trip can be 'wrapped around' is the weekend of Saturday May 8.
The trip will most likely be four days. The next thing that I have to figure out is how to spread the four days around that weekend. At this point the trip will tentatively run between Thursday May 6 to Sunday May 9.
If this is a problem, let me know as soon as you can.

Location
The trip will most likely (80%) be in Temagami.

Other Stuff
This is a good article about Bear Safety that I borrowed from the Yukon tourism page.

Let Me Know What's Happening
If you still plan to come let me know if the dates (above) work or not.
If you can't make it, let me know.

-that's all folks!

February 10 2004:

So far the response has been good. The people with some interest are (in no specific order):
  • Jon
  • Brian
  • Kaveh + possibly Charmaine
  • Dihim (aka 'Day')
  • Maciej + possibly Laura
  • Mike (Branch)
  • Sean
  • me

That's a good number. Even if half the people show up, we'll still have two boats.
I was also considering (as an alternative to Killarney and Algonquin) doing a river trip (e.g. the French or Spanish).
If you have any suggestions, or actually have a preference as to where we go, let me know.

Here's some stuff I found on my box that might be useful for the trip (I know it's still February, but I love this stuff):
-that's it for now:)

February 6 2004: Here's the deal...

It's about the time of year when I start planning the first canoe trip of the season.

At this point I'm taking survey to see who, and how many people are interested.

If you've come on a trip with me, I think you've either had a hellish experience or a blast. If you haven't been on a trip with me, then this is your chance.

What I have in mind is either a 4-5 day, or 9-10 day stint in either Killarney, or Algonquin Park.

I'm putting this out now (3 months ahead), because I know any amount of time is hard to get off of work or school. So here's it is, your advance notice.

The trip is going to be a challenge; -it's not going to be a picnic, but that's what makes these trips awesome.

If you're at all interested, let me know, just so I can begin working out some logistics, etc.

Here are some rough figures:
  • When: First week of May (not carved in stone yet)
  • Length: 4-5 days or 9-10 days depending on interest
  • Cost: About $120 for 4-5 days, about $200 for 9-10 days
  • What the cost covers: A ride up, food, park permits, packs, boats
